This is Tony Collett's weblog dedicated to my thoughts on the happenings in the world, comic books, anime, science fiction, DVDs, and anything else I encounter. I'm forty-something, male, and married (sorry, ladies)

View Article  Failure Theatre
Remember "Failure Playhouse"? Well, that wasn't the name, but this time of year, the networks would show the pilots that didn't make it to series. Back then, I'd read the TV Guide regularly, on the lookout for shows to watch, and you'd see a new show and read the description that ended "Not on (network)'s announced Fall schedule." Ken Levine writes about some of these lost gems. I agree with one commenter that one network should have a show where the viewers pick a show to run on that network. It could be a six-week thing, run as what they used to call the "Summertime replacement series", whatever. It'd be a show I'd watch.
View Article  Web Hosting Assistance
There are so many good things about the internet, but do you know one of the great things about it? The low entry barriers. Unlike other businesses or facets of life, if you've got an idea for a website, instead of just sitting back thinking "wouldn't be great if they had a website for this?" you can put it up yourself. And it's a lot more apparent in this instance that the excuses you come up to keep from doing it are feeble. I read an article in a magazine years and years ago about setting up your own website and had a few examples of writing HTML code. I tried it, amazed at what I could do, and what I didn't know was a simple online search away from finding out. Even now on this blog, I go into writing out the code for links or install pictures even though I have this program that just lets me highlight and put in the information, making it even simpler.
And you don't have to be intimidated by finding a place to host your website. I would tell you not to get a free hosting site because not only do you get what you pay for, they sometimes tend to go out of business, leaving you high, dry and without your input. But where can you go to find a hosting site? With the help of this web hosting comparison site, you can shop around and find the best one for you. And they do more than just point you to hosting sites. They offer all sorts of informative articles such as Web Hosting Security At Risk: Are You? and more. So with a little online surfing (which is what you were doing anyway, just more in a general direction) you to can be online with your great idea.
View Article  Happy Anniversary Geoffrey & Jennifer Wessel
Man, was today a busy day or what? Now I also just found out it's Geoffrey and Jennifer's wedding anniversary. Have a good one, you guys and don't worry: you'll remember the kids' dance recital better than seeing Jane's Addiction. Now if only Geoffrey would give us more than daily Twitter feeds.
View Article  Happy Birthday Andy Martello
I just found out a little while ago it was Andy Martello's birthday. Unfortunately, his blog can't be read through the RSS feeder I use (and haven't found a good replacement) I like to pop over there from time to time to see how he's doing and what new interesting things he's talking about. But I kind of slipped out of the habit and hadn't been there for awhile. While that results in getting to read more of his stuff, I'm sure he'd like to have more people come by. So head over there to read some stuff and say happy birthday. Thanks to Gordon for tipping me off about this.
View Article  Organic Shopping
With gas prices rising and the debate on global warming going on, a lot of people are realizing that the Earth is a finite resource. At the very least, we shouldn't be so cavalier about how we use our resources. Some are realizing we should be more careful, and want to shop better. And I need to start using the reuseable bags that are in my car and I keep forgetting them.
Another way is shop Organic products that are available at this next generation shopping engine. And it's more than recycled bags and the usual things you would think of when you think of going green. They let you search for products by searching for such attributes as organically grown, solar-powered, made from bamboo, post-consumer recycled, compostable, chemical-free, cruelty-free, and reclaimed.
I know there's a lot of times when you feel like you can't make a difference, so why bother? But a lot of times, just starting makes a difference. Once you realize it isn't as bad as you thought you start doing more and more. And if more people just did a little, it would add up a lot more than when they were doing nothing. Now if I can remember to bring those reuseable bags into the store...
View Article  New Doctor Who Companion
They announced who the new companion for the Doctor would be. Here's the piece from BBC News. And here's reaction from The Beat, which is pretty much par for the blogosphere, with some complaints and expressed frustrations of wishes unfulfilled, with a dash of Stephen Moffat backlash that is sure to increase when he takes over. I go through the uncertainty with Kathy every time they announce a new Doctor, only to go away once we see him in action, and I'm sure it'll be the same way. Remember the hubbub when a pop singer was announced as the companion when they brought the show back?
And while we're on the subject, here's the trailer for the next Torchwood (mini) series Children of Earth:
View Article  Choice Hotels Promo
Even with the weather up here taking a bit of a cooler turn, at least I don't have to have the furnace on. And you can start thinking about all the things you want to do this summer. Last night while we were out shopping I picked up some sunscreen. It's been years since the last time we got some, so I wasn't sure how good it would still be. And with all the talk about skin cancer it's better to be safe than sorry. And our vacation is coming up in a month. Although I usually prefer to stay home or come back home by bedtime, I'm starting to think about the different things we could do. And I like finding good deals that I can share with you as well.
One of them is for economy hotels promo going on for this summer. I'm part of the Choice Privileges rewards program where you get points if you stay at one of their hotels that you can use to get a free night. Well, right now they're running a Choice Hotels double hotel rewards where between now and August 13th you get double points if you stay at one of their hotels. Just book through the website or call their toll-free number. And if you're not a member yet, it's real easy to sign up and they give you a number to use until you get your card, so you can start taking advantage of this deal right away.
View Article  Happy Birthday Mark Gibson
Well, if I can post best wishes for someone's birthday who isn't going to see it, I can certainly post for someone who can. Today's Mark Gibson's birthday. And to celebrate, Wal-Mart is giving away a full scoop of ice cream from 11am to 4pm today. Better yet, head on over to Mark's site and wish him a happy birthday. It looks like things are starting to go his way, but with what all he's been through he could use some more good luck. Meeting him and his family was one of my favorite times, and Kathy and I hope to get to do it again soon.

If you're involved in the art of dance, you want to have good quality dance apparel that won't break your budget. If so, then Capezio Dance is the site for you. Right now they've got a major clearance sale going on where you can save up to 90% off of original prices. And they also offer Bunheads dance accessories. And if you live in New York City, not only are you in luck with their different locations you can go to to shop in person, but July 27-29th they're offering a dance teacher summit. So whether you've got a child just starting out in dance or you're in the Big Apple working towards your big break, there's plenty of quality dance wear and accessories available here.
View Article  What I Got 5/29
A day late, but not a dollar short, but the UPS man left it on the back porch on the only day this week that it rained. Fortunately, DCBS does a good job packing that the contents within were unaffected. Here's the comics I got this week:
DC Library Roots Of The Swamp Thing
Dr Who Magazine 408
Geek Monthly June 2009
Ignition City 3
Madame Xanadu 11
Neil Gaiman Coraline TP (graphic novel adapting the book, art by P. Craig Russell)
Stand American Nightmares 3
Wolverine First Class 15
And I forgot to order Previews, and didn't want to have to comb DCBS's website to make out my order next month, so I picked it up at the comic shop. And it was a close to a Half Price Books, where I got "Meanwhile...Milton Caniff" a biography by Robert C. Harvey. It's a thick hardcover just over 950 pages with samples of Caniff's art throughout. And it was only $9.98. That's the thing I like about going to Half Price Books or Book and Music Exchange or The Great Escape used book boxes (last two located in Louisville) The surprises you wouldn't necessarily buy at full price, but the price makes it a good deal, and you enjoy it even more as a result.
View Article  Sports Injury Care
If you participate in sports you know you run the risk of injury. If you're part of a team or organization, you know there's somebody that knows what to do to get you back up to speed, or at least feeling better. But what if you're not part of a team, or you're the one in the organization that they turn to in the event of an injury? With the help of PhysioRoom.com you can get the First Aid Kits and equipment needed to take care of that injury. Not only that, but they have the the only official Premier League Injury Table List, so you can have access to see which player is injured and what his previous injury record is like. Plus, you're able to view the list of all a - z injuries and with professional guidance from the experts. But you know what they say about a lawyer representing themselves in court? It can be worse than having a fool for a client if you go it alone, so make sure you have a physician make the final determination of your injury.
View Article  Police Work To Rule
So what do you do if you're told you're not getting a raise this year? And what if you're unable to strike? Well, if you're not in a union, I guess you just have to take it. But if you're part of the police force you just threaten not to write tickets to make money for the government. Yeah, it's over in Australia, but it doesn't mean it's not true over here. Like my dad said, they're making less money with the property taxes, so they've got to make up their shortfalls somewhere. There's so many police cars out there that they're practically pulling each other over. So let's be careful out there.
View Article  Ride The Manta
Sea World has a new coaster out called the Manta that looks very cool. It's shaped like a manta and similates the undersea journey of a manta as an exciting thrill ride. But don't just take my word for it. Head on down there and check it out for yourself right now! What's that, you say? Can't make it to Florida right now? Oh well, for now you can watch this video to get an idea of what the ride is like:

And right now they've got a contest going on where you can enter to win a chance to get a front row seat to ride the Manta. That's right, you don't have to wait in that long line to get in the front seat like you do other roller coasters, you can win a golden ticket (oops, wrong show) to get in front. And it isn't just a thing where you fill out your information for a chance to win. They've got a series of fun activities you can participate in to get you excited about Manta, which is good, because when you complete all 6, you get a front of the line ticket. How cool is that?

View Article  Captain America Early
There's been a rumbling lately about the return of Steve Rogers as Captain America. Sure, Marvel has been insisting that he's really dead and sincerely dead, but us comic fans didn't buy it for a minute. The only sure deaths in comics are Uncle Ben and Bucky, and the latter's recent activities haven't been helping their case. And then there's the comic "Reborn" that Marvel is tight-lipped about but Wizard's ready to spill the beans in their solicitations. Well, Wizard calls it "Rebirth", potayto, potahto. Now comes the word that the next issue of Captain America is coming out on Monday June 15th instead of the usual Wednesday release. Must be something pretty big if they're doing something like that.
View Article  Massachussetts Apartments
If you're looking to move to the central Massachussetts part of the country, you're probably wondering how you're going to find a place to live. You could ask people who live there or check the want ads. Or you can do a search of these apartments for rent Worcester MA to find the right place to live. They're better than just reading want ads because you can narrow your search criteria by such factors as price range, area and number of bedrooms. Plus they've got a picture of the apartment to give you a better idea of what it's like. If you find one that interests you then you can fill out a request form and they'll be in touch and can answer any questions you have about the apartment in question. It sure beats flying blind going on a brief ad, and having to live out of your suitcase while you go around to different apartments after you relocate. This way you get more information on the different apartments available, and the descriptions and information is so detailed, it's the next best thing to actually going to the apartment yourself. Just the thing you need if you don't have the time or ability for apartment hunting in central Massachussetts.
View Article  DC Transportation
If you're planning a trip to Washington DC, unless you're driving there and back the question of you're going to get around is bound to come up. And despite what you see on TV and think, everything isn't so close together that you can get by on walking around, and that may be problematic if there's a group of you down there. That's why it's beneficial to see about getting a charter bus in Washington DC to get around the DC, Maryland and Virginia areas. American Limousine & Bus has the largest fleet of luxury limousines, stretch limos, sedans, luxury SUV's and charter buses available in the entire Northeast at highly competitive rates. They can handle groups from 15 to 100 in addition to individual transportation needs. So whether you want to get around our nation's capital in style, or there's a group trip in your future and you're trying to figure out how to get everybody around to see what they want to see American Limousine & Bus can help you out. And if you live in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area and need transportation to different vacation destinations such as Atlantic City and Florida, they can set that up for you as well.
View Article  Thursday Blues
With Memorial Day being Monday that's pushed the week back a day for a lot of people. Have you thought it was a day of the week and figured out it was actually a day later because of the holiday? But you never have that problem of going to work on Saturday because you think it's Friday, do you? Or whatever day you're off since Saturdays and Sundays off are a luxury for the super lucky worker, it seems. A lot of folks have different days off of the week, and some consider themselves lucky to have two days off in a row.
And another way it stinks is for the comics fan. Instead of getting our weekly fix on Wednesday, we've got to wait until Thursday. Unless you get your comics through the mail and have to wait a bit longer. The service I use now only takes a day's transport, so I'll be getting this week's comics tomorrow. But the itch hit me today. Being used to mail delivery now, I didn't feel a thing on Wednesday. There's a lesson here somewhere, but I don't know what it is.

Even with it getting close to Summer time, a lot of people are looking to head down to the warmer parts of the world to get away for a vacation. Or they're thinking farther ahead, to when it gets cold again. Either way, it would be good to see about spending some time on the Isla Mujeres Cancun at the Ixchel Beach Hotel. The hotel is close to the downtown area and the beach, the ideal setting for those who want to get away from it all and relax, but don't want to be out in the middle of nowhere either. I can understand that. You want to break away from your hectic stressful life, but sometimes after relaxing a little bit you get the itch to go out and have some fun.
