There was a delay where I went to the comic shop later than usual. I usually go in the mornings, but ended up going late afternoon. While I was out and about, I went to Kroger's to pick up some Aunt Jemima Breakfasts that Kathy likes that were on sale, as today was the last day. Also got a couple of pounds of ground chuck also on sale and will use one of them for sloppy joes tomorrow night. I also went to Meijer's and got some sale items, such as Ore Ida french fries (which are on sale cheaper than the Kroger brand that I had been getting) and hash rounds that Kathy likes, also got her more pork fritters and I got me some Campbell's Select soups that were on sale. Then I went to Papa Murphy's and used a coupon that was due to expire to get a Chicago style stuffed pizza that we had half for supper and put up the other half for our lunch. We watched "Merv Griffin's Crosswords" that we got turned onto by Augie De Blieck Jr, an episode of "Corner Gas" a Canadian show that Superstation WGN started running and ended it with tonight's "Deal or No Deal". We still have "Reaper" from last night to watch and tonight's recording of "Bionic Woman", along with a couple of "Corner Gas" that record tonight, "Back to You", and a "Daily Show With Jon Stewart" that I watch by myself.
Wil Wheaton got his first printing of his new book, looking forward to getting it. And Dominick Dunne has an article on the Phil Spector case from Vanity Fair online that I'm going to go and read, thanks to Colleen Doran for the link.

Shots of The Simpsons and the inspiration for that shot, side by side. It's just a drop in the bucket, and by no means comprehensive. I thought of this the other day: that The Simpsons is becoming the "Kevin Bacon" of pop culture. If you're talking about a TV show, movie, etc. you can reference The Simpsons' take on it. I saw in the listings that the local station was showing "The Computer Wore Menace Shoes" last night that I was going to record and see about doing a take-off summary of "Sundays in the Village" that Gordon's been doing. Unfortunately, there was a storm going through that cut off the second half of the episode. BTW, thanks for saying I'm one of your favorite bloggers, Gordon.

SuperWife has shared the "new rules" she received in e-mail. Nothing against her friend, but she didn't credit Bill Maher, as it's the closing segment on his show Real Time. It's one of those shows that's good, but unfortunately, it's one of those that stuff happens that gets in the way of watching it. At the link is a video to a "New Rule" that isn't on the show, and they have a transcript for New Rules. If you liked the e-mail, you'll love the originals.

Love sports? Love competing in trivia contests? TriviaFix is an online site where users can compete and submit sports trivia. It's an online community where sports fans can get together, form teams, and answer sports trivia questions. Also, you can submit your own questions for use, with your own audio and video to supplement it. Plus there's monthly prizes that are given to the top players in all sports categories. You get points by answering and submitting questions toward those prizes. You can organize teams and competitions to compete and answer your way to the top. That's what cool about this site. It's a site that wants the fans' participations to create their own online communities. It's not laziness, it's having some sense. If you're creating a sports fan based site and you don't channel that fan's energy and enthusiasm, you're missing out big time. If you're a sports fan, whether it's general knowledge or an expert about a sport, team, or player; there's a place for you to shine at TriviaFix. Plus, you can meet other sports fans, form friendships and teams, and compete for prizes or stature. Or at least revel in the friendship and competition.

A tourism group named Visit Milwaukee is planning to build a statue of Fonzie for downtown. Yes, they got the idea from TV Land, and Henry Winkler says he'll be there for the dedication. Another interesting point in the article is that TV Land is re-evaluating their statue promotions in light of their redesigning the channel for more comtemporary shows for boomer's children. Another cable channels goes to suckytown.

Mark Gibson reports that the black and white issues of Zot! will be collected next year. It's HarperCollins, so hopefully that publisher won't go out of business like Eclipse and Kitchen Sink did, his previous publishers. Also, hopefully there'll be a hardcover edition.

How would you like 2 GB of storage that you can carry with you whereever you go? With the Kingston flash drive, you can carry and transfer data anywhere you go. It works with virtually any device with a USB port - even cross-platform from Macintosh to PC and vice versa. Mobile storage can now be as easy as carrying around a pocket knife, as it's about the same size.

I concur with Maggie Thompson that last night's Heroes season premiere continues the ride. If the show's hitting the sophomore slump, it ain't showing here. Also, the Entertainment Weekly article does have spoilers, so beware. There was a moment at the end of the episode (no spoilers here, either) that reminded me of Bunnyman's assertion that WASP males get preferential treatment on the show.
Tonight's the Reaper pilot. Yes, Kevin Smith directed it, but he has reported he's stayed within the confines of the script and the premise, deferring to the show's creators. Plus, the preview I've seen of it looks good.

Paul Harris adds the movie Ace In The Hole to his "Movies You Might Not Know" list. Mark Evanier and Roger Ebert have been writing about this film that has just been released on DVD, even though it was made back in 1951. But it's a Billy Wilder film, and what it's about (a banished small-town reporter using a man stuck in a cave to orchestrate a media circus) is being hailed as more timely today. As a bonus, Harris points out that Turner Classic Movies will be showing it at 1:15pm Eastern time on Thursday the 27th. I've already got my TiVo set.

Many people have preconceived notions about auto dealerships. Unfortunately, it isn't good. Many people will say they trust a used-car salesman about as far as they can throw a piano. Sad to say that people think that being careful and warning others about car dealerships and their "tricks" is the way to avoid falling into their traps. And some people think the industry isn't going to change their ways. But there are some that don't wish to do business in that way. They want to offer a quality product and make it right in the event there is a problem. The problem is communicating that to the public at large, that they don't think that it's another "con" by a car salesman. One way to do that is to obtain an auto dealer bond. An auto dealer surety bond guarantees that the dealer operates within the guidelines that are set forth by the state that they do business in. And like credit, the better standing the dealer has, the lower the rate when they obtain that bond. Obtaining that bond says to the community at large that they comply with the regulations of the state and they are serious about guaranteeing their vehicles for sale.

Colleen Doran on Bill Mantlo and his tribute book. For those of you tuning in, Mr. Mantlo was in a roller blading accident back in 1992 and is not expected to fully recover. She quotes from this article in The Pulse with an update on his condition. Basically, his insurance quit covering him and he enrolled in the New York state Medicaid program in 1995. It allows him only $50 a month after his social security to pay for his personal items such as clothes and to have vegetarian meals, grooming and anything else that would make him comfortable. You can still buy the tribute book.

There's an article and interview with co-creator John Ostrander, as well as the other co-creator Del Close inspiring the first new story. Also, the inspiration of Gordon the bartender and the name Munden's. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this new way of doing comics via the web has me excited.

Mike Gold on how OJ's latest eclipsed the news that Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was denied permission to visit Ground Zero. Reminds me of the Saturday TV Funhouse cartoon "Divertor" about a superhero called to make celebrities create distractions from the news of real concern. That seems to be trick anymore. Hearing the latest about Paris/Lindsay/Britney will help divert us from all our problems until it gets to the point that things'll be so bad that our brain shuts down and we won't need the diversion.

Pregnancy is a life-changing experience for so many reasons. Unfortunately, many people feel anxious due to financial problems. If they don't have insurance, they find maternity insurance is difficult if not impossible to obtain, or so expensive it's out of their price range. This is not a time to have those worries. Pregnant Insurance can help by letting people sign up for their service where they can save up to 60% off their costs of bringing a new life into the world. And they offer 24 hour counseling and a 24 hour nurse hotline.

Mike Sterling on Don Rosa's Captain Kentucky. My interactions with the good Captain and Don Rosa's work parallel Mike's. I've followed Rosa's work since those days, as well as his "Information Please" columns in The Comics Reader (this was a great fanzine that I picked up back issues when I discovered it in college, and pick up copies whenever I see them. It was more than the news, the writers poured themselves in each issue. It was more than a fanzine it was letters from old friends talking about what they were up to. But I digest...) I also got both Norwegian reprint books when offered by Diamond a while back: the Captain Kentucky collection as well as the Pertwillaby Papers edition.

Recently I received some free samples of a new product called Freeze It that's an advanced therapy pain relief gel. It's supposed to help with muscle, joint and arthritis pain relief. I wanted to have an opportunity to use it when I would get the most use of it. With the annual festival in town, I had my chance. I walked around town looking at all the booths with stuff for sale. By the time I got back to the house, I was feeling sore in my lower back and shoulders. I opened up the packet of Freeze It and applied some of the gel to the problem areas. One thing I liked about it was how almost all of it got to the areas I rubbed it on and didn't have to do that much hand washing to get the rest off, there wasn't that much on my hands, so hand washing was minimal. Before when I had problems in my lower back I would either apply Ben Gay or use the heating pad. I never really used any cooling gel in those problem areas before. Right after putting the Freeze It on I felt so much better. Next time I go to the store I will keep an eye out for this and buy some more to use.

Tonight's the second season premiere of Heroes. Before that is the debut of Chuck. We saw it on a DVD that was a free rental at Blockbuster. It's a high concept premise (a supercomputer's information is downloaded to someone's brain) but the execution is more grounded. And it's better than watching "Deal or No Deal" beforehand.
And to gear up for season 2, here's this week's online comic introducing 2 of the characters joining the cast this season. I tried out the new animated version and all it is is zooming in on the comics panels with captions and word balloons popping up with some generic background music. Better to pick one of the other versions and enjoy at your own pace. And the Ken Burns-esque mockumentary Takeso Kenzei can be found here. Also, I found the Nokia Store in New York is premiering the Heroes game on their phones.

This reads more like an article "Things to do in K-Mart if you're bored." You know, those articles that have funny things you do in _______ if you're bored that you see from time to time. It looks like this one was written in another country, as it has "lay-buy" instead of lawaway. It's funny to read and come up with some of your own. Things like "go to the front of the store and tell everyone who enters 'Welcome to Wal-Mart'". Can you think of any?

Although there's some discouragement in the review at Ain't It Cool News, I've been looking forward to the season premiere of the Simpsons and Family Guy tonight. More than I usually do about new episodes of each show, as the Simpsons supposedly have an opening credits sequence referencing the events of the Movie, and Family Guy is a one-hour episode satirizing Star Wars. I saw the leaked footage on YouTube of the latter back in May, and have been looking forward to it ever since.
I sometimes get on these kicks where I take an interest in a particular type of entertainment, and lately it's been television. With the new fall lineup I've been setting up shows to watch on the TiVo. Today I added Dirty Sexy Money from seeing a preview on TiVo, because the premise interests me and it stars Peter Krause of SportsNight, a show SuperWife and Bunnyman turned me onto last year and we got the DVD set of the whole series and watched it.

Remember a while back when I wrote about Prince's new CD being distributed for free with the Sunday paper over in England? Well, a movie maker was inspired to make a similar deal to have his movie on DVD distributed the same way. What's interesting is the article says that Prince turned out alright with his deal (at first, the record company cancelled the release of the CD over in England) leading to increased sales and sold out shows. Which should show the big companies that giving something away isn't going to lose you money, you'll gain more as a result.

Everybody has dreams about what they would do if they won the lottery. My dream was to invest a good enough portion of it to ensure an annual income for the rest of my life. Hey, I have other dreams, but I don't want to be one of those winners who end up broke and being a "whatever happened to" article in the paper. Real Estate Trust Deed is one place that does hard money investing to insure to the best of their ability a maximum return on investment. It's been years since we've seen the "Dude you're getting a Dell!" guy. Yet that advertisement still is remembered and has impact in the marketplace. Reading around the internets lately of bloggers talking about Dell most of them recall that advertising campaign. It does really stick in the mind, it got peoples' attention. But the quality of the computers and the PC deals you can get is what keeps them going. If you're looking for cheap PCs don't use an old ad campaign to influence you, let the quality of Dells be the deciding factor. |
