Kathleen David weighs in on Friday's Doctor Who episode "The Sound of Drums". And Geoffrey Wessel grouses about a line cut from the show that I forgot about but sounds right, given the characters. It's Sci-Fi-town, Jake. They'll have all sorts of violence on there (when they're not showing mutant bug or animal movies, or ECW) but first sign of sex out comes the viewer discretion warnings and the scissors.

View Article  Life After Tomorrow
I missed the first half hour but watched the rest of a film on The Movie Channel called Life After Tomorrow. It's about interviewing the girls who played the orphans and titular role in the musical Annie. It's interesting learning how literal the phrase "life changing role" can be, not only for those girls but their families. Not only that, but them having to deal with the fallout and repurcussions of those changes, wondering if it was their fault somehow, not to mention when the limelight fades for them. Some even talk about dreaming about doing their roles. I know I still have dreams about doing old jobs from time to time.
They're doing a free preview weekend for Showtime and The Movie Channel, so the only chances to catch it are if you subscribe to either of those services: October 3rd at 9:05am or the 9th at 5:45pm on Showtime 2, and the 11th at 10:15am on Showtime or 1:15pm on Showtime West. All times are Eastern, and non-dish subscribers may be subject, so please, I beg of you, if you want to watch the show, check your listings.

With prices going up, wages not so much, and the housing market going down the tubes, many people are looking into the idea of do-it-yourself home improvement. But a lot of times, they're scared off. The reason behind that may be the amount of work involved, and that's on top of all the work you do nowadays just to get through the day to day. I have to admit that's one of my problems, getting started. But I can tell you, there's no better feeling than after you've worked toward fixing or improving something. You may not be done at the end of the day, but you have a good feeling that you've worked toward a goal.
But I suspect the biggest reason is the lack of knowledge in doing home improvements. I doubt there's any plumbers reading this, so who really knows how to remove and replace your toilet? And I'm going to go out on a limb here and say there's no electricians out there either. How in the world do you do any home wiring with destroying the house or yourself? Or any other home improvement chores? What if I told you you could even get DVDs on hot to remove and replace your toilet, do drywall or home wiring? Remember, knowledge is power, so why shouldn't you have the power?
View Article  Saturday Wrap Up
After Kathy's nap and reading, we watched the first episode of "Dirty Sexy Money". Peter Krause of "Six Feet Under", "Sports Night" and "The Lost Room" miniseries on Sci-Fi (Kathy watched the latter but I didn't. She remarked that Elle Fanning, who plays his daughter in DSM also played her in "The Lost Room" also serving as the McGuffin) is a lawyer whose father was a lawyer for a rich and powerful family and swears not to be sucked into that life as his father was, but ends up having the abyss call and stare at him before he stares back. With enough intrigue and plot twists to keep the engine going on this for awhile, and to keep me interested, even though Kathy says the family's "messed up". I check "Grand Slam" because I missed the last episode and GSN is rerunning it, but it's one we've seen before. We wrap up the night finishing off the last 3 episodes of disc 2 of "How I Met Your Mother" season 1 DVD. Hopefully we'll be done before the release of season 2 on Tuesday and get through that to watch the just started season 3.

Went to take Kathy to work this morning, did a little reading and went back to bed. Got up, did some stuff on the computer, and went to pick her up. We went and got Subway for lunch/supper and I got the early Sunday edition of the Indianapolis Star, some lottery tickets I won, and bought a couple of more. Jackpot's $49 million, or over $30 million in the cash option. At least it's fun to dream of winning and helping out friends and family. Ate lunch and watched Legion of Superheroes that suffered from a bad signal the station got and a sucky storyline, a Corner Gas, Doctor Who, and Deal or No Deal from last night. Also getting the laundry done while all this is going on. Then Kathy went in the bedroom and rest before tackling her reading (about a month ago, her church had the Bible in 90 days challenge that she signed up for) and we'll watch some more stuff either on TiVo or DVD.

It's said that we spend a third of your lives in bed asleep. Therefore it would follow that you would want to make that third of your life as calming and as comfortable as possible. That's why Terry's Fabrics offers a wide range of quality bedding to choose from. Whether you're looking for bedspreads or duvet covers, they've got what you're looking for. When we went to the family reunion last year, the hotel we stayed at had duvet covers on their beds. Kathy and my mom liked them a lot, so when mom saw them for sale, she picked some up for us. Before, when we change the sheets, we had different sets where we could put a new one on while the old one was washing. Now, I try to get the set done so we can put them back on the bed. Sure, it's more work, but it makes up for it in looks and comfort. And with all the styles available, you can find one that fits your bed and your needs.

Call this a pre-emptive post before SuperWife does it: pets in Star Wars costumes.
Hopefully this doesn't scare her away, we are all anxious to hear what she, her hubby, and new in town friend are up to.
And while we're on the subject: I'm sorry to hear that Gordon has been having some problems both personal and blogwise, and hope things'll go better soon. Most of the time, the things we enjoy, whether it's reading a blog, listening to a podcast, and heck, most things not having to do with a computer, we enjoy without making comment. While a lot of times, people are overwhelmed with feedback (as in the more popular arenas, such as television) some times, no feedback is coming except to point out something wrong. If you're having a bad day or week, it may set you off. But a lot of times, people will enjoy what you're doing but out of habit don't say anything. And no, this isn't me fishing for compliments. If you like what I do here, check out some of the others in the blogroll at right or say hi to Gordon. They're all very good reads, and if you haven't checked them out, why not do so now? And if you're not happy with what you see here, I apologize and will be glad to refund what you paid, as they say over at Podculture.
View Article  Cell Phone Recycling
Note: The following post is sponsored.
Like with computers, people are getting new cell phones and not sure what to do with their old ones. Also like computers, you can't just throw it away due to some potential toxic materials present. Some lawmakers are even passing laws in response to environmental impact saying that old cell phones can't be tossed away. Plus, you don't want to be contributing to the disposable society, but want to make a contribution to society and not be so wasteful. One drawback is that it isn't as well known where you can take your old cell phones to do better. You may have heard something on TV or the radio, or even read it online, but you can't recall any details, or at least details that are sufficient for you to take your old cell phone and have it do some good.
Well, I can tell you that if you don't plan to act on this information right now, at least make note of this so that you can consult it when needed. Wirefly can help you with recycling your old cell phone. Whether you wish to comply with the regulations of your city or state, or you merely don't want to cause any damage to the environment by pitching your old cell phone, they can help you out. Plus, many charities collect cell phones to recycle, either by raising funds from recycling, or forwarding them for emergency use. For example, domestic violence victims can still call 911 from a deactivated phone. Or your phone may be refurbished and sold to a country that is behind in technology, so it is still of use. Or if it can't be used either way, the phone can have the potentially toxic materials removed and recycle the reusable materials.
So for whatever reason you wish to recycle your cell phone, even if it's to get it out of your junk drawer, Wirefly can help you out.

Fangoria Comics is no more. Apparently some corporate restructuring had to be done, as not many people want to pay 8 bucks for a Starlog full of articles and information gleamed online a few weeks before. I'm guessing Fangoria is the same deal. Pardon me for a moment of scherdenfraude, as I recall the Starlog editorials extolling you to follow your dreams and they'll come true, and I sent some cartoons I did for consideration for publication, and got a note with the comics back that they didn't look at unsolicited submissions, contradicting their written policy in the magazine. That was it for me.

Noted that a lot of people are talking about saving energy. With the costs of energy going up, people are looking at ways to save energy. One way people are talking about it is by cutting out those energy uses are are frivolous, such as Christmas lights. It's a point that has a lot of emotional and personal stakes. Although that would be rational to cut out the extravagant Christmas lights, people are afraid to say anything because they would be accused of not having the holiday spirit, that they're a "Scrooge". It's one argument where the emotions way too heavily to try to engage in debate. But they do bring enjoyment to people. I know Kathy likes to look at all the Christmas decorations and see how people have their houses done up. One could argue that the lights do serve a purpose.
There is one way to still have Christmas lights and not worry about their energy use. With LED holiday lights you can still have your display and save 80-99% on your energy use with them. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, if everyone who used Christmas lights used LED Christmas lights, they would save enough energy to power 200,000 homes for a year. Plus, LED holiday lights last for more than 50,000 hours.

Some people look at offers of getting some of the money they've paid into a business with skepticism. But there are actually such things. Every year, after deducting expenses, etc. a certain amont of profits from about 5 years ago is given to the members, being part owners of the business. It's pretty nice getting something back each June.
Cooperative Insurance does something along the same lines with their home insurance. Once you're accepted for membership, you can insure your house and contents with them, and they share the profits with them members.

"A man convinced against his will,

Also got a couple of pounds of ground chuck also on sale and will use one of them for sloppy joes tomorrow night. I also went to Meijer's and got some sale items, such as Ore Ida french fries (which are on sale cheaper than the Kroger brand that I had been getting) and hash rounds that Kathy likes, also got her more pork fritters and I got me some Campbell's Select soups that were on sale. Then I went to Papa Murphy's and used a coupon that was due to expire to get a Chicago style stuffed pizza that we had half for supper and put up the other half for our lunch. We watched "Merv Griffin's Crosswords" that we got turned onto by Augie De Blieck Jr, an episode of "Corner Gas" a Canadian show that Superstation WGN started running and ended it with tonight's "Deal or No Deal".
