This is Tony Collett's weblog dedicated to my thoughts on the happenings in the world, comic books, anime, science fiction, DVDs, and anything else I encounter. I'm forty-something, male, and married (sorry, ladies)

The matter I spoke of earlier has been resolved, and a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulder. Afterwards, we went to a soda fountain where Kathy got her Chocolate Soda that she always wanted, and we finally decided to eat lunch there. I had a double bacon cheeseburger with fries, and she had a breaded chicken with fries. Then we went to the WallyWorld to get batteries for the digital camera (got the rechargeable kind) and a bag of popcorn for...
Now comes the getting ready for the trip back to Louisville this weekend. Bags are being packed, snacks getting ready, folding chairs to see the fireworks, reading material, etc. Although we're not going to see as much of our friends as we usually do on these trips (they say they're getting married! I think they're getting stuck up) so we'll be staying in the hotel where we can swim and use the whirlpool (Kathy saying it isn't likely she will, but when we met everybody last year, where was she? In the pool!) and have planned up a geek tour, including another stop at Book and Music Exchange with a bag of books and videos to trade for credit, Great Escape, and checking out Secret Identity Comics, which wasn't open last time I was down.
View Article  Finally Saw Grindhouse
Grindhouse was one of the few things I had to look forward to. Unfortunately, my illness waylaid me, plus this didn't look like a film one saw if they were feeling a little "under the weather". Responding to Mike Norton's post about it brought back the memories of reading Famous Monsters of Filmland and thumbing through Fangoria and seeing pictures of some of the gorier moments of slasher films which would put me off, not realizing that it's only fleeting moments in cinema, whereas the image lingers longer in print (and online, as this strip from Multiplex will attest to). This is a type of film you have to get into, leave your brain at the door and enjoy the ride. A ride is the apt analogy here, because like with other thrill rides, first you scream at the scary parts, then laugh at everyone and yourself for laughing. Unfortunately, this was not the type of experience I was in for last night. My first clue was after I bought my ticket and the girl made a phone call saying someone bought a ticket for Grindhouse. Only a couple showed up besides me.
Like Snakes on a Plane, this is a film that is more internet buzz than boffo box office, so I won't add much more to the writings and reviews to what all's out there. I will see that although I already saw the psychadelic kaleidoscope Feature Presentation bumper in front of Kill Bill Vol. 1, it brought back a flood of memories of my first theatre, the nearby Diana Theatre, that used it about 30 years back. I think this is a film that most readers here will enjoy, and should go see it while they still can, preferably when there's quite a few other people. But if you think there ain't much chance (or want to just wait for the DVD) word is that the DVD release will have at least another faux trailer (the "Hobo With A Shotgun" that's on the Canadian and select US prints) and expanded and "restored" editions of the film.

Looking better. Forecast for the wedding now has a high of 72 degrees, with a 10% chance of rain.
View Article  Weather Or Not It Looks Good
We're getting to the home stretch for the big day (and get better soon Tammy, and lock Martha up) and it looks like, at least on this front, we've got a week of crap to wade through until then, including a matter that needs to be taken care of before I go down there I'd rather not share in this public forum. Also, there's the weather. After the storms (and a tornado I just missed coming home) on Wednesday, they're forecasting rain/snow/cold temps tomorrow, and not looking to warmer or better until after I get back next weekend. However, it looks better for Louisville, with sunny and temperatures in the 60's next weekend, maybe even getting up into the 70's next Sunday. Will the forecast stay that good? Stay tuned (or go here to check)
