This is Tony Collett's weblog dedicated to my thoughts on the happenings in the world, comic books, anime, science fiction, DVDs, and anything else I encounter. I'm forty-something, male, and married (sorry, ladies)

View Article  Weekend Update
And yes, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.
This post was inspired by this one, wishing I had a good a weekend as them (Unfortunately, The Astronaut Farmer isn't showing anywhere around me now. Maybe when it hits the dollar theatres or video ), or at least spend time with them. 4 more weeks...
Y'ever have one of those days where no matter what, you just feel sluggish? This is one of those days for me.
I managed to get the dishes and laundry done. I went to the next town to pick up some sour cream and milk and trade a couple of my Blockbuster Total Access videos for a couple of videos, and used up the last of a cash card Kathy won at work a while back to get some pizza for lunch for us. I read Fantastic Four Visionaries John Byrne vol. 4 today and kinda paid half attention to Stan Lee's The Condor that was on Cartoon Network tonight. Kathy said she had it on to see if Stan would make a cameo in this one, and sure enough, he did. She also had something to say about the skanky look of one of the female characters in it, as well.
I won a free pass to see The Host at a preview showing Tuesday, and I think my lack of saying anything up to now says more than I could here. I finally used my free ticket to see 300the other night, and unlike other free movies I've seen, I don't feel like I was ripped off. Dunno if I'll get the DVD, though. I was thinking about seeing TMNT this weekend, even though it looks like another computer animated film about snarky animals thrust out of their element. Oddly enough, I'm looking forward to seeing Meet the Robinsons next weekend in 3D. Unlike Chicken Little, the 3D isn't the only factor in it's favor. And I have my passes to see Peaceful Warrior next weekend, do you? I just checked, there's still some available. And hopefully, I'll win a pass to see Grindhouse.
We've been having a lot of rain the past couple of days, causing the return of Lake Collett in my backyard, and water to rise up in my basement. I've been keeping my eye on the latter to make sure it doesn't rise any further.
Still haven't heard anything about the next interview at the job, but hopefully that doesn't mean I've reached the end of that avenue.
View Article  RIP Drew Hayes
Poison Elves creator Drew Hayes passed away. Apparently he had some health problems, but not much more was known, and now this is slowly making it's way across the internet grapevine.
I went through a Poison Elves phase a few years ago, reading the Sanctuary story line. I even went back to get some of the earlier issues, and got the trades of the stories before that. One favorite part of the story was when the star of PE the elf Lusiphur (and no, he isn't one of those toy or cookie making elf. And even more bad ass than the ones in Elfquest) being recruited into the thief guild Sanctuary. As part of that, he was to undergo training by the martial artist master Mr. Moto. You would think it would follow the cliche of the student being cocky and getting taken down a few pegs by the teacher, and becoming a better fighter and person as a result. And the story looks like it'll go down that same path when Lusiphur (after being briefed on paying the proper respect) going right up, sticking his hand out and saying "Herro Mr Moto! My name is Rusiphah!" But Mr. Moto-sensei looks like he's getting as good as he gives as far as ass kickings. And don't get me started on Luse's eternal foil the Purple Marauder, a sombrero, angora sweater, thong wearing pest with a sabre crying out "NYAR!" among his tauntings.
This whole thing is sad. Hopefully it is a case where it is just a rumor and not true.

In case you haven't had the opportunity to follow up on my earlier recommendation, they've just announced that IDW is releasing The Complete Terry And The Pirates starting in July! Hoody Hoo!
I've picked up some of the NBM reprints at a convention years ago, and subsequent attempts to find later volumes on the internet tubes had been unsuccessful.
The $49.99 price tag might make you wince, but the color Sundays will be restored and included. "The syndicate had dedicated engravers working on his Sundays. Caniff was thrilled, “I never had a chance like this in my life to do real newspaper color…Right from the start, I started using the most elaborate color schemes I could get.”" Even if I didn't have a good discount at my comic shop, I'd gladly pay full price to get this book.
View Article  Update II: Electric Boogaloo
I went in to my job interview this morning. It went well, as the gentleman conducting it tried to get the next person to interview me, but apparently was busier than he thought. Said I should hear from him to schedule another interview sometime this week. So that's another hurdle cleared.
Meanwhile, I found out I won a pass to The Host, a movie I talked about here. When I went to get the new episode of Podculture, I was mad to read about the midnight movies being shown at this theatre (also scheduled to show The Host) since I'm at least 5 miles from any movie theatre, let alone any doing anything as cool as this.
Sometimes I hate living in the sticks.
