This is Tony Collett's weblog dedicated to my thoughts on the happenings in the world, comic books, anime, science fiction, DVDs, and anything else I encounter. I'm forty-something, male, and married (sorry, ladies)

View Article  Press Your Luck and Michael Larsen
Apparently Mark Evanier's speculation that Game Show Network would be showing the original Press Your Luck episodes featuring Michael Larsen was wrong, as they're showing a different episode. Mark talks about it here, here, and points out GSN will be showing Big Bucks: The Press Your Luck Scandal Monday night January 9th here (which should still come to pass) Briefly, and I may have talked about it before, Michael Larsen studied the patterns of the board used on Press Your Luck to win cash and prizes, walked away with $110,237 and it took 2 episodes or twice as long to show one game. The episodes themselves were never repeated except for the GSN documentary. Worth a look-see if you haven't seen it already.
View Article  My Date With Drew
End of last week, I used a soon to be expiring coupon at Blockbuster for a 2 for 1 rental. One of the films I got was My Date With Drew, about Brian Herzlinger who had a long time crush on Drew Barrymore. Winning $1100 from a game show version of Taboo where he had to get the other players to guess "Drew Barrymore" as the final part, he decides to act on his dream of getting a date with Drew. Buying a video camera and planning to take advantage of Circuit City's 30 day return policy, and planning to utilize the 6 degrees of separation theory, he goes forth. If you like watching a movie where you can root for the little guy, feel down when he's down and happy when he's up, then check this out. There's even a website he set up during his quest. Apparently, the DVD was a Blockbuster exclusive (with exclusive footage) until today (or yesterday).
The other movie I got was Havoc, about rich white teenagers emulating the gangsta scene starring Anne Hathaway trying to shed her image and some clothing. To quote Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle about Katie Holmes' nude scene "You know the Holocaust? Picture the exact opposite."

Got down to watching the last of the Colts game, where there was a last-minute nail-biting judgement call that decided the outcome of the game that ended with the Colts winning, ending their losing streak (hopefully for good).
And with the end of holidays comes the time of year (January to March) where things are dreary and there is nothing to do or look forward to. Although I've been talking about football, I can't really say that I'm enough of a fan to get me through this rough patch. Scrubs, a show I discovered on DVD, is starting up again on TV, and some of the shows I do follow are coming out of their holiday rerun cycles. Again, alas, I'm not a follower of 24 or American Idol. So hopefully following some of my resolutions and job search will improve this time of year.
View Article  Joyous New Year (Or Where I've Been and What I've Been Up To)
Just to let y'all know, I haven't fallen off the face of the Earth.
Christmas was good, better than expected, even managed to get some good presents for everyone on my list and sent a few bucks to Feed the Children. I got some DVDs, such as Gargoyles, the Disney action animated show (I should watch the first discs I got last year) and a couple of sweatshirts to be comfortable in. The tree's still up, plan to finally take down tomorrow.
As for New Year's, fortunately the wife didn't have to get up for work at 3:30 ayem to go to work the next day, so she could stay up until Midnight. We checked out "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" and let me tell you, after recovering from his stroke last year, Dick is about the only one that ended the year better than the beginning. Also, Mark Evanier also weighs in on the subject. It was still later than usual for the missus, so after midnight she went to bed. Not that I'm a party animal as I went to bed after 1. What can I say, I've never been much for celebrating New Year's. The best times in the past have been things like watching anime videos with the anime club.
As far as resolutions, I've believed that anytime was a good time to make resolutions to improve yourself. There's the whole New Year's is a clean slate thing, but that ups the stakes, as when you slip up you give up. So taking that philosophy improves the chances of being able to finally succeed. Given that, I've decided to do more reading of books (first up: Howard Zinn's "People's History of the United States") and watching the stacks of DVDs (particularly the TV series sets). Hopefully 2006 will be better for all of us.
Right now, I'm recording the rest of "The Comedians of Comedy" onto DVD to clear it out of the TiVo, while checking on the Colts game (we're winning, yay!) and surfing the net.
