This is Tony Collett's weblog dedicated to my thoughts on the happenings in the world, comic books, anime, science fiction, DVDs, and anything else I encounter. I'm forty-something, male, and married (sorry, ladies)

We don't usually cover sports at the Cents, but here's a story about not a winning shot, but winners in more ways than one. Courtesy of Paul Harris.
View Article  When The Children Grow Up, Their Lives Won't Include...
What started as a couple of kids not understanding their dad's request to "crank the windows up" in the car led to this list from Paul Harris of things children's lives won't have in adulthood.

It's been unusually cool for this time of year. Then the heat hit. Yesterday was up in the upper 80s, and it was about 10 degrees less than that in my house. Made it a tad uncomfortable.
Got up this morning and got the 2 window air conditioners out of storage and got them set up. This is the first year with the new couch, so I had to raise the living room one up a little higher. Then I put up a lot of my cold weather clothes and got my my cooler clothes.
Things are cooling down here, but between the heat and the work, it still feels a little warm.

Last Saturday as I was shopping at Wal-Mart, there was a display by one of the checkouts where they were selling special edition DVDs of such films as Spider-Man 2, Monty Python and The Holy Grail and Labyrinth for under $20. Picked up The Dark Crystal.
Then I went to Blockbuster and took advantage of their buy 2 get 1 free promotion. Mainly picked up some films I liked from Netflix:

  • Napoleon Dynamite --maybe I'm missing something, ended up concurring with Roger Ebert's review of the film. But the wife's sister recommended it to her, thought I'd give it another shot.
  • Hellboy--Speaking of which, the wife mentioned she caught some of this on one of the channels while trying to wade through Bravo's heroes, villains and vixens specials last week (I don't recall the exact title, mainly because doing so might lead you to believe it's worth watching. I quit halfway through the second special, mainly because it was attempting some of the sarcastic tone of VH1's 70s/80s/90s specials, and it seemed that any character that didn't have a movie or TV show need not apply) and thought it was pretty good.
  • Flight of the Phoenix (remake)--I had mentioned liking it before, but too lazy to try to find the link.
Okay, just because I like you, here it is.
  • Danny Deckchair--Another movie I liked. Since that was about all I said about it, here's a link to Gary Sassaman's review.
  • Closer--A smart movie that features people you may not like, but interesting to watch, nonetheless. Not even disappointing with all of Natalie Portman's nude scenes cut out.
  • Looney Tunes Back in Action--Yeah, it was as bogged down as Robocop with all those additional directives in Robocop 2, but wasn't that Area 52 sequence a hoot? Complete with Kevin McCarthy (in black and white, no less) reprising his Invasion of the Body Snatchers role. Another good bit early on was in the Warner Brothers commissary. See if you can catch all the gags.

And of course yesteday was new release Tuesday. Was suprised to find Danger Mouse at Best Buy, as a previous check on their website said it wasn't at any of the area stores. Also got Moonlighting seasons 1 & 2. Saw all 3 documentaries, can remember why I liked this show in the first place. Of course, it's before it jumped the shark (hint: on the question of "will they or won't they", avoid answering as long as possible)
Yep, that stack's getting bigger.
View Article  I'm Tired
Past couple of nights I've been really tired, going to bed around 7:30-8pm while it's still light out. Not sure if it's the leftovers of last week's illness, but I've already eliminated the drinking done Monday as a cause. Hopefully I'll be able to stay up later.
