This is Tony Collett's weblog dedicated to my thoughts on the happenings in the world, comic books, anime, science fiction, DVDs, and anything else I encounter.
I'm forty-something, male, and married (sorry, ladies)

Now I've read Ossie Davis has passed away, too.

Actor John Vernon has passed away. Moriarty from Ain't It Cool News has written a touching tribute here. And sorry, Mark, he also mentioned his voice acting in various Marvel cartoons.

There's a bit of hub-bub on the net over Stan Lee's appearance on 60 Minutes last night, specifically that the significant contributions, or any acknowledgement, of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko was omitted. You can read about it here and here, but as they mention, Mark Evanier does a good job of talking about it here (and a follow up here).
As Mark said, and from seeing and hearing Stan talk, in later years he has mentioned them and acknowledged their contribution. Although they have quite a bit of interview footage, and they have to edit it down, it is sloppy journalism on CBS' part. As Mark pointed out, and Joe Bob Briggs did years ago, look at what they get wrong about articles on things you're interested and knowledgeable in, and realize they're also reporting on other topics, often of more importance. But I think a lot of it may stem from the public perception of cartoonist as a singular writer/artist, rather than separate people. How many shows have you seen where a comic book creator was writer and artist? Even in the past, Mark has said that it's easier to tell Joe Public that asks if you draw the pictures when they find out you work in comics "yes", rather than explain the process. It was in one of his ancedotes in his first book Superheroes In My Pants about getting his stories to the comics companies and to artists. (There are additional juicy details that I will not reveal, instead directing you to buy the book and thank me later). Also, I ran into a similar problem when the wife and I was playing the Scene It? TV Version a while back. They showed a clip from The Incredible Hulk and then asked who was the artist that created the Hulk. I said Jack Kirby but expressed a fear they would say the answer was Stan Lee. Sure enough, Stan popped up on the screen as the answer. But she is knowledgeable about comics (even starting to get her back in, by reading the Joss Whedon run of X-Men (hey, I first got her hooked by giving her the Dark Phoenix Saga before a major snowstorm).

When Gary Sassaman was kind enough to link to me and give me a plug, he mentioned one of the things I talked about here was anime. Problem was, although I mentioned it was one of my interests (you can even see it there in the box in the upper left corner) I hadn't mentioned that much. The problem is, the DVDs and TV shows are out there liked I dreamed, but the time to watch them is hard to find. I haven't even been to a local anime club meeting for I don't know how long.
But although years ago in Japan, "otaku" was a forbidden word and was shunned by those they tried to brand, it was embraced here in the US. But the times, they are a changin' and they're starting to market to them now.

It sure looks that way after this survey of students, combined with how most adults feel.
"When told the exact text of the First Amendment, more than one in three high-school students said it goes "too far" in the rights it guarantees. Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories."

Went on a bit of a spree. In addition to Wonderfalls and Penn and Teller's Bullshit! Season 2, I also picked up October Sky, Catch Me If You Can, and Taxi Season 2 (what does a yellow light mean?)
Still looking for the time to watch all these discs... Tuesday, February 1

Mike Norton writes about how going out for lunch can add up. Favorite quote "it has to be better to raise them with ourselves rather than wait for a parent, spouse or some other busybody to offer Helpful Hints. Then it becomes an imposition. Something to be resented."
And Mike Sterling wrote about the DC Digests of yore. I have most of the ones he scanned (missing the UFO one) and lament they're not around, too. And if you could send some mojo to Wil Wheaton's cat Sketch, who is having some health problems. Years after the fact, I still miss my cat Ranma, and not even Selina, Oscar and JoJo can make it up. And congrats to his new writing gig about video games on Onion AV Club. |
