Actually, that's the date analog television signals will switch off, which means that America will remain stupid.
Sorry about that, still watching Bill Hicks while surfing online.

I'm not convinced it's going to happen on schedule, though it certainly has more of a chance than the whole "going metric" drive did. Why does it have more of a chance? Because there's so much more money involved. Honestly, though, I'm still not sure where the profits from the sale/licensing of the freed frequencies will really go. The sums of money they stand to make by taking these analog, broadcast signals, cutting those thick packets into tasty strips and auctioning them off to the highest bidders in the telecom market are potentially staggering.
What bothers me the most about it all is that it's taking something that's the lowest common cultural denominator here in the US and playing around with it almost violently. The plan's so poorly constructed, and in the end it appears to be about nothing but money. The money to be made by the above mentioned auction and also the money made by both equipment sales to the masses along with an attempt to drive all the hold-outs into the clutches of cable and satellite systems. If cable had actual inter -company competition I'd feel better about it, but they don't. Every place I've looked, if one wants to have cable he has only one, local choice. .. and that's wrong. Anyway, as I said up top, I don't expect this to go off on schedule as written. The masses may be ignorant of it now, but when the date draws closer they'll get interested and loud about it. Bread and circuses, the politicos know that it's unwise to screw with what makes up most of the mob's lives, what distracts them from all of the important things. Re: TV To End 2/17/09
